Dear Alumni, past guests, friends of, and volunteers
of Mozambique Horse Safari.
We are writing as two volunteers whose lives were deeply touched by our time with Pat and Mandy and the horses in Mozambique. Lisa and I met last year at M.H.S. Lisa was an amazing volunteer from California who was in Mozambique four months. Since returning home she has done a farrier course and
become more involved with a horse rescue foundation. I am from the west coast of Canada and under Pat's watchful eye for two months, my riding improved enough to go on a Wildlife Safari in Zimbabwe on horseback!
2011 New Land Rover Challenge ...!
I made a DVD of my time in Africa with the horses, all the more poignant now that so many of the herd have recently been tragically lost due to poisoning from toxic weed. I
have shown the DVD as a fundraiser, generating money to support the M.H.S herd. It's been really fun viewing with groups of friends, horse lovers or not, who have then become enthusiastic about living out their own dreams!
As you may know, the Retzlaff's trusty old Land Rover needs to be replaced, and we're excited to invite you to join us in a 2011
fundraising challenge toward that. Here is our plan ~ I will mail you a copy of the DVD, along with some entertaining stories to read aloud before each scene. Although they are stories from my own experience, you'll
recognize the characters and place. Of course you can embellish with your own stories; so much the better! I can
also e-mail you the e-invitation template, so you can set some dates and send it out to people you'd like to share the presentation with. I have shown the DVD 4 or 5 times over a couple of months and it was the easiest $1000 ever come by. Just imagine if twenty or thirty of us do the same, there's the new (previously-owned) Land Rover!!
Our initial goal is $10,000. Every single contribution, modest or grand, will make a difference!
You are welcome to fundraise in your own way, or simply donate, without the fanfare of the DVD presentation. Just click on the DONATE button, then send Lee an
e-mail so we can put you on the map! Or Lee will send you bank transfer details if you prefer that method
If you've ridden in the Land Rover, you'll appreciate one of my favourite memories. Here we are with Mandy at the wheel, in the beat-up vehicle that has seen much better days, doors roped shut, needing a hill or a push to start the engine. Mandy is going on effusively about what a Wonderful Car this
is, patting the dashboard. How trustworthy it's been, how it just keeps going and going, how it's taken them from Zimbabwe to Mozambique and more. How it should be bronzed and put on a pedestal. You may may not know that the horses
also depend on this vehicle to eat. Every single day, locals cut grass for the horses (no stash in a barn like the rest of us). The Land Rover goes round with the open trailer and picks up this grass, then the grooms (and volunteers!) stuff
it into hay nets twice a day for the horses to feed. No vehicle, no horse hay. In turn the horses' safari business supports it's local staff, including their children attending school.
Grand prize!
Here is a little taste of our DVD.
Now for the challenge part ~ a Grand Prize for whoever raises the most money!
Mandy and Pat have offered a
HORSE VOLUNTEER
position
(you would still have to pay for accommodation & food but
riding would be free) for 2 weeks. Or a 3 day
HORSE SAFARI
in Vilankulo (riding only, not including accommodation)
Both of the prizes are transferrable, if you can't come yourself then inspire one of your presentation viewers to go.
